Elk came to Finland following the melting glacial edge of the previous ice age, followed shortly by humans. The boats that first sailed our ancient wild lakes had elks carved on the stern, and elks appear in many rock paintings, and as the mythical companion animal of many shamans. Elk and deer who shed their antlers for winter symbolize the cycle of seasons, and of life; in the spring, the sun rising between their antlers signals the dawn of the new year.

Hirvi saapui Suomeen jääkauden sulamisreunaa seuraten – ja sen perässä ihminen. Hirven pää koristi muinaisten erämaajärviämme seilanneiden veneiden kokkia, ja eläin on kalliomaalausten myyttinen hahmo sekä monien shamaanien suojahaltija. Sarvensa talvella pudottavat hirvet ja peurat symboloivat vuodenkiertoa ja elämän syklisyyttä: keväällä niiden sarvien välistä nouseva aurinko aloittaa uuden vuoden.
