The Whooper Swan—Finland’s national bird—represents purity and beauty. It is central to Baltic Finnish mythology, representing the cosmos as it dives underwater through the realm of the dead, travels through our earthly realm, and flies up into the realm of gods and light. In the Kalevala, the world was born from a cosmic swan’s egg, laid on the leg of Ilmatar, goddess of air. The wedge of swans returning back North among the Milky Way brings people the joyful reminder of spring’s return.

Suomen kansallislintu laulujoutsen symboloi puhtautta ja kauneutta, sekä itämerensuomalaisten kansojen myyttiä kosmoksesta: se sukeltaa veden alle kuolleiden maailmaan aliseen, liikkuu tässä todellisuudessa sekä lentää ylisiin, jumalten ja valon valtakuntaan. Joutsenen muna edustaa myyttiä maailman synnystä, ja Linnunrataa pitkin takaisin pohjoiseen kulkeva joutsenaura tuo viestin: kevät on vihdoin täällä!
