The great power animal of northern peoples, the Bear is the symbol for many clans. In Finnish mythology, Bear is the king of the forest, a god who descended from the constellation Ursa Major, from the shoulders of Otava. Bear is a holy brother, an ancestor. After Bear’s funeral feast, it’s bones were buried as a human, except the skull from which beer was drunk in its honor, and then placed in a holy pine tree, the “skull pine.”

Karhu on pohjoisten kansojen mahtava toteemieläin, monien sukujen ja klaanien symboli. Suomalaisessa mytologiassa metsän kuningas: suuri jumalhahmo joka laskeutui maahan taivaasta, Ison Karhun tähdistöstä, Otavan olkapäiltä. Karhua pidettiin esi-isänä tai pyhänä veljenä. Karhun peijaisissa se haudattiin kuin ihminen, paitsi sen kallo, josta juotiin olutta ja joka sitten nostettiin ylös kallohonkaan.
