Yksi suomalaisten merkittävimmistä luonnonhengistä oli Mielikki, metsän emäntä, pienriistan ja lintujen suojelija sekä metsän kuninkaan Tapion puoliso. Hän katsoi metsän aarteiden, eläinten ja puiden perään. Metsälle lähtevät miehet ja naiset toivat hänelle lahjoja saadakseen luvan kulkea metsässä turvallisesti ja karhujen häiritsemättä. Ensimmäinen saalis tai sato kannettiin pyhän puun juurelle kiitoksena Mielikille – lahjana, ei omistamisen merkkinä. Mielikiltä pyydettiin myös suojelusta karjalle, etteivät pedot veisi metsässä laiduntavia lehmiä ja lampaita.
