Knitting pattern (US English, digital download)
Inspired by Reetta and Riikka's childhood beanie, which was probably bought in a store and was a regular baby hat (70's bright colour scheme!), but their mother crocheted decorative wheel shapes to the sides. The decorations provide nice extra protection from the winter winds, and the idea can be applied to other hats of a suitable shape.
Fresh colors were chosen from a preloved sweater found at a second hand store for the tv production Metsien Kätkemä (Back to Nature Finland) – feel free to choose your own favorite colors for the sun wheel.
The beanie is made with increases and decreases with the beautiful false braids creating a segmented form reminiscent of classic Finnish baby hats. The finished flat piece can be used for a pattern for the lining. Crochet suns are sewn over the ear. Then the lining and beanie piece are sewn into shape from the back seam and the top. These are combined to create a gloriously warm Sun Wheel Beanie.
